SIGNED, RPPC of KI-KI HABA-HABA MAN, c1910, P T BARNUM, SIDESHOW PERFORMER
Signed Real Photo Postcard of sideshow performer Ki-Ki “Haba-Haba” Man Harry L. Signed by Blitz in black ink to the upper margin of the image: “Ki-ki, Venice, California”. Real photo postcard; 5.25″ x 3.5″. Top edge unevenly trimmed, some creases, else in very good condition. Intent on pursuing a career as a wildman and a spieler, Blitz took the name Ki-KI and began working for P. Barnum sometime in the 1880s and, according to him, it was Barnum himself, who first told him to make up like a Zulu – bedecked in proper barbarian apparel, blackened face, several gee strings, armlets, leglets, and earings, and a most ferociously inane expression. His show persona would jump around, dance, utter cries, and bellow “Hubba-Hubba, ” attracting hundreds of visitors to the tent. During the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco, he would also promote the African Dip – part of the amusement area, Joy Zone of the exposition – represented by an enormous, grotesque figure of a stereotypical savage. In 1910, he would becom embroiled in a bitter and highly-publicized divorce, his wife claiming that masquerading as a’monkey man’ had gradually changed her husband into a brute. ABOUT PHOTOGRAVURE: Photogravure is an intaglio printmaking process utilizing a carefully etched copper plate made from the original negative/image. Prints are made by pressing suitable paper heavily down upon the inked copper plate which has been intricately etched to varying depths corresponding with the actual tonality of the original negative, This precisely etched plate combined with a fine “honeycomb” screen controls the amount of ink to be transferred to the paper at any given point in direct proportion to the variation of tone in the original image. The result is a true continuous tone print which combines many qualities of a traditional silver based photograph with a tactile feel similar to an etching, engraving or lithograph. Rich in tonal detail, the photogravure process produces delicately rendered shades for a look which is unique in the world of photographic print making. In the early to mid 1900’s photogravure was selected (when budgets allowed) for special high quality publishing and portfolio projects, but due to its significant expense and labor, the process is rarely seen today. From Man Ray and Ruth Bernhard to Brett Weston and Ansel Adams, many of the world’s most renowned photographic masters have published their images in the rich photogravure process.
