ABOUT PHOTOGRAVURE: Photogravure is an intaglio printmaking process utilizing a carefully etched copper plate made from the original negative/image. Prints are made by pressing suitable paper heavily down upon the inked copper plate which has been intricately etched to varying depths corresponding with the actual tonality of the original negative, This precisely etched plate combined with a fine “honeycomb” screen controls the amount of ink to be transferred to the paper at any given point in direct proportion to the variation of tone in the original image. The result is a true continuous tone print which combines many qualities of a traditional silver based photograph with a tactile feel similar to an etching, engraving or lithograph. Rich in tonal detail, the photogravure process produces delicately rendered shades for a look which is unique in the world of photographic print making. In the early to mid 1900’s photogravure was selected (when budgets allowed) for special high quality publishing and portfolio projects, but due to its significant expense and labor, the process is rarely seen today. From Man Ray and Ruth Bernhard to Brett Weston and Ansel Adams, many of the world’s most renowned photographic masters have published their images in the rich photogravure process. For your consideration are two rather interesting items. These two items are marqee tops for a mutoscopea, used in penny arcades to look at photographs from the 1906 SF earthquake. The are hand drawn posters on heavy board each with a photograph of the earthquake attached. One is out of the frame and one is framed. The unframed piece is 20 x 14 with many condition issues including soiling, discoloration, fading/toning, margin wear etc. It is, at best to be considered in fair condition. The framed piece is 23.5 x 15.5 in a period frame with trim that is blue that matches the poster. The photo in the frame is pretty good, but glued down for sure. The bold blue writing is on the poster that the photograph is glued to. The poster in this piece is very good. Really quite a interesting combination of photographic history, Americana, side show, and folk art. These seem to be one of kind pieces. 95 % of the items I sell are pre-owned, vintage, or antique. Every item I sell will have some signs of wear. The combination of photos and descriptions are my best effort to communicate the beauty, condition, and any defects. Your personal expertise regarding an item may well be greater than mine so feel free to ask questions regarding elements not mentioned in my description. Sometimes issues come up and there are delays, which I understand. Just let me know. Check with me re larger items. Sometimes items going to apartment, forwarders, or third parties may also require a signature. Depending on the country, I may also send the package certified with a signature required upon receipt. This is part of a unique set of photos from “Captain Jim Moore’s Famous Shows” Carnival & Sideshow Traveling Show based out of Bridgeport, Pennsylvania. This original image is one of 5 from different carnival shows they set up across the country. He ran sideshows along with carnival rides and games. This photo features a great sideshow banner for the OLD PLANTATION SHOW. It featured African American performers. The man in the middle with a beard is Capt Jim Moore, the owner of the traveling carnival show. These photos are from the estate of Nettye Cameron who traveled with the circus (possibly as a manger for Mr Moore). These photos come from her estate, down the line from her great great nephew. She worked closely with the side show cast as she had a lot of photos with them and some were signed (will be offered up at a later date). Please check my other auctions for more vintage photos. In most cases, the actual original photos are much clearer than the posted images. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Photographic Images\Photographs”. The seller is “photofella” and is located in this country: US. This item can be shipped worldwide.

Original Vintage Circus Posters Memorabilia Collectibles Barnum Bailey For Sale. 1860 P T BARNUM Circus Side Show Albino Family. Amazing piece of American & Circus HISTORY. Here is one of the Only period PT Barnum Museum pieces of history you will probably ever see. This amazing RARE Currier & Ives hand colored Stone Lithograph of Barnum side show “freaks” was published at the height of Barnum’s success with his famous museum in NY City in the mid 19th Century.. And even more so now, with the 2017 PT Barnum movie “The Greatest Showman” more people are now familiar with his story, how he began and the devastating fire that destroyed it all. Published about the year Abraham Lincoln was first elected president, this is truly a fantastic museum grade find! Imagine, 160+ Years Old! See enlargeable images above and below Rare and fantastic, original, ca1860 Currier & Ives hand colored Stone Lithograph of a P. Barnum’s Museum / Circus Sideshow attraction known as The Madagascar Albino Family titled in full The Wonderful Albino Family. /Rudolph Lucasie, Wife and Children, from Madagascar. / They have pure White Skin, Silken White Hair and Pink Eyes!! / Have been exhibited at Barnum’s Museum, N. Although we have had a number of late 19th C circus posters over the years, we have never had a piece this early, actually published while Barnum was still alive as such material is virtually non existent. That’s why this piece is so exciting as it was published at the height of his success and most likely Barnum owned one of these lithograph prints himself. Currier & Ives image measures approx. (including large margins on each edge) and is framed in a ca1900 Oak frame. The Image is a full length group portrait of Rudolph Lucasie, his wife and their 2 children dressed as they appeared at Barnum’s Museum with voluminous pure white heads of hair. The Lucasies, known at the Museum as “The Albino Family”, were obtained in Holland by Phineas Barnum during a visit to Amsterdam in 1857. He brought them back to America where they became one of his most popular exhibits. Barnum billed them as being of black Madagascan lineage and professed that their pink eyes stayed wide open while they slept! The Lucasies were managed by long time Barnum employee Dr. Along with other “living curiosities” in Barnum’s employ. They appeared in his American Museum on Broadway and offered life story pamphlets for sale along with their 15 cent carte de visite photographs. This rare and original, Currier & Ives stone lithograph is in. Good to very good condition for its 160+ years. The colors are bright and vibrant and the image area is generally clean with some spots of staining and soiling confined mostly to the large margin areas. There are, however, three significant, tight tears – two that enter the sheet from the top edge. One of these extends approx. 1 into the Image area. While the other extends approx. 2 into the image area. There is a third, tight tear that enters the sheet at the center of the left hand edge and extends approx. 6 into the Image area. However, the tears are do not detract from it’s beauty, and are not noticeable unless you know they are there.. The Lithograph has not been repaired, is 100% UN-restored. And can always be professionally restored, if one so chooses. We like it the way it is, as it is in better condition than any others we have seen in our 38 years collecting. Most we have seen have sustained heavy moisture damage and staining. See enlargeable images above and below. A rare and wonderful ca1860 Currier & Ives American Circus / Sideshow Attraction image and a fantastic addition to any collection or as an accent to your Victorian decor!! This print is 100% guaranteed to be an original, ca1860 printing by C&I and not a restrike, reprint or reproduction. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Historical Memorabilia\Fairs, Parks & Architecture\Circus & Carnival\Programs & Posters”. The seller is “cvtreasures” and is located in this country: US. This item can be shipped to United States, China, Japan, Brazil, Canada, United Kingdom, Denmark, Finland, Australia, France, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Bermuda.
