For the Decorative, Rare & Unusual. Those who find beautiful meanings in beautiful things are the cultivated. For these there is hope. An Early 20thC Painted Papier-Mâché French Fairground Passé-Boules Ball Toss Game. Origin: French Period: Early 20thC Provenance: Unknown Date: c. 1910-35 Height: 25″ Width: 14.5″ Depth: 10. The papier-mâché Passé-Boules toss game, as a Pierrot clown, wearing a blue rimmed pointed hat, with a gaping open mouth into which one tosses balls, showing the original painted features, and with unusual glass eyes, the whole on a pink painted hanging board showing related newspaper cuttings to the reverse, to a ball tray with chalked sections at 2, 5 and 8, the whole surviving from the first half of twentieth century France. Evocative of the magic of the fairground, the mask and backboards paint has flaked and chipped off in places with some small cracks here due to the nature of it being a well-used amusement item, the chalk numbering is later and the ball tray is possibly a later replacement. Historically, passé-boule (ball-toss) was a very popular fairground game in France from the 19th century onwards and the masks often depict figures to be ridiculed. A particularly aesthetically pleasing example that adds an instant nostalgic charm to a room. All pieces listed by Doe & Hope are of the finest quality. Antique Early 20thC Hand-Painted Fairground Sign Children's Joy c. 1910
An Early 20thC Hand-Painted Fairground Sign; Children’s Joy; c. Origin: English Period: Edwardian Provenance: Unknown Date: c. 1910 Width: 31.5″ Height: 6.5″ The decorative hand painted fairground, sign designed to draw in the crowds at fairgrounds in the early-twentieth century, sign written with the words Children’s Joy, in green with yellow highlights and shadowed in orange, the whole being an early example of fairground and circus memorabilia. Suspended from two corner holes, the panel has paint flaking to several areas and scuffs commensurate with age (it was of course part of a travelling troupe) but structurally it is sound. The wording suggests this sign was advertising any number of attractions. A decorative gem, and an early example of its type, encompassing all the fun of the fair with particularly nice sign written script. However, any imperfection, which is deemed to be more than just natural ageing, will be duly described above. B: The P&P stated applies to U. And remember, Antiques are Green!
