Found in the estate of a 1930s circus promoter, there is no record for’Deacon James Finch’ nor do the details suggest that this is anything more than a stage name. Rather than the traditional pose w/a bible or in front of a congregation, Finch is noted only for height & weight in the negative. He is seated in a showman’s way, a precedent set by Barnum so many years before. Religion as the promoter’s gimmick to make Finch more palatable to a white audience is notable. Important Americana for that reason. Strong development & contrast on postcard photo stock w/ no back marks. Corner wear w/ink stain reverse that does not carry through.

26 1/2 x 4(bird to bird), 24 1/2 x 3 1/2(base), 3 1/2 x 3 1/2(bird/star targets), Good Condition, unused, gray painted, light surface rust (more rust on the left 3 birds), all parts are intact and usuable. I’m not sure whether this is a HC Evans or a Midway Full Rack. View all scans carefully to determine. I have scans of front and back. This was never used in a carnival or amusement park. DESCRIPTION: Offered to you is this Very Rare antique 1930s Art Deco large circus poster, banner, oil on canvas painting depicting a Bengal tiger in its surroundings. Comes from the estate of an Austrian diplomat who held appointments in France and Italy during the 1920s and 1930s. Typical Art Deco stylization of the tiger and the background. Resembles the style of O’Henry Tent & Awning Co. There are signs of age with some paint flaking but it doesn’t seriously affect its overall impressive looks. Dimensions: width – 66″ / 168cm ; height – 32″ / 82cm. For condition see photos. Scarce and highly collectable item that would proudly take its place in any home, museum or private collection.
