Antique CABINET CARD Photograph. Photographer: Obermiiller & Son. Location: New York, New York. Marie Bayrooty was the only female member of the Bayrooty Brothers Oriental Troupe, who performed on the Barnum and Bailey Circus sideshow. A famous’whirling dervish,’ – as members of the Mevlevi Order are known colloquially – she broke a record by whirling 2,990 times in 37 minutes in 1906, per the The New York Times, who described her as of Syrian descent. The Times, in the typically dismissive tone of the day, describe her performance as such: Mary Bayrooty, the Syrian girl who last year whirled for thirty-two minutes without cessation, making something like 2,240 revolutions established a new record yesterday afternoon in Barnum & Bailey’s Freak Hall. She made 2,990 twirls in thirty-seven minutes. This is a new world record. When the last note died and the last whirl had been achieved, Marie was fresh as paint. She ran across the floor to the nearest reporter and pinned a rose on the lapel of his coat, remaining until her fame had been suitably sounded. Then she sat down and gave the other freaks a chance. RARE & EARLY CIRCUS CDV – LONG BEARDED PERFORMER ADAM KERPEN – CHICAGO BACKMARK – You are considering one of the rarer long bearded sideshow performers, Mr. This is one of the rarer views of Kerpen. The image and mount are in excellent antqiue condition. The backside has the Chicago backmark on the mount. A great addition for your American Circus photo collection. CONDITION: Please view my detailed photos for the actual condition of the image and as part of my description. The CDV is in excellent antique condition. The print remains bold and has some minor foxing. The mount is in excellent antique condition with the backmark on the rear and A. KERPEN printed at the bottom of the front side of the mount. THIS IS A VERY RARE ANTIQUE FIRST MODEL, TWO PART HEAD WITH PAPIER MACH FACE CLOWN, FROM THE VERY START OF THE SCHOENHUT HUMPTY DUMPTY CIRCUS IN 1903. HE IS IN ALL ORIGINAL CONDITION. HE HAS THE EARLY TWO PART FACE WITHOUT EARS WHICH IS HOW THEY WERE FIRST MADE, EARS CAME LATER. HE ALSO HAS THE EARLY FEET THAT ARE ROUNDED AND UPTURNED AT THE ENDS. HE IS IN PLAYED WITH, BUT GOOD, SOUND CONDITION, BUT HE IS 120 YEARS OLD! DESPITE THIS HIS STRINGING IS GOOD AND HE POSES WELL. HE IS 9/ 22.5 cm TO THE TOP OF HIS HAT. HIS COSTUME IS GRUBBY AND WORN IN PLACES AS YOU WOULD EXPECT AFTER 120 YEARS. HIS LADDER IS VERY OLD BUT THERE IS NO WAY OF TELLING HOW OLD, ie 1903 or a bit later, BUT IT IS NOT A MODERN ONE. PLEASE EXAMINE THE PHOTOS CAREFULLY AS THEY DO FORM PART OF THE DESCRIPTION. ALSO THEY WILL ALWAYS REQUIRE A SIGNATURE.
