Antique WAINO & PLUTANO Wild Men of Borneo SIDESHOW CDV PHOTO Circus Performers
Up for sale is this antique cdv circus/sideshow photo of Waino & Plutano, the Wild Men of Borneo. The cdv has some moderate soiling and wear as depicted in the scans. It measures approximately 3 7/8 inches by 2 3/8 inches and most likely dates to sometime around the 1860’s-1870’s. Please look at the scans to further note the condition. The Wild Men of Borneo, Waino and Plutanor, were a pair of exceptionally strong dwarf brothers who were most famously associated with P. Barnum and his freak show exhibitions. Waino and Plutanor were actually Hiram W. And Barney Davis, two mentally disabled brothers from Pleasant Township, Knox County, Ohio farm, born in 1825 in England and 1827 in Ohio respectively. The 1850 census for them suggests they were born slightly later in 1829 and 1831. Their parents were David Harrison Davis and Catherine Blydenburgh. After their father’s death in 1842, their mother remarried to William Porter. They were each 40 inches tall (100cm) and weighed about 45 pounds (20kg), yet could perform feats of great strength such as lifting heavy weights and wrestling with audience members on stage. Discovered and subsequently promoted by a traveling showman known as Doctor Warner in 1852, Hiram and Barney were given new names, Waino and Plutanor, and a sensational back story they were said to be from the island of Borneo, where they had been captured after a great struggle with armed sailors. They initially had modest success, but at least one newspaper believed them to be dwarves from the United States. The two soon went on to be exhibited at state fairs across the United States. At the time of the 1860 census they were living in Somerville, Massachusetts in the household of Henry Harvey, a showman. At some point in the next few years management of the pair was transferred to a relative of Doctor Warner, Hanford A. In January 1877 they were performing at the New American Museum located in Manhattan. In June 1880 at the time of the federal census, they were touring with William C. Coup’s circus and were enumerated under their assumed identities. By 1882 Waino and Plutanor became involved with P. Barnum and his traveling exhibitions. Their exhibitions primarily consisted of performing acts of great strength, such as lifting adult audience members and wrestling with both audience members and each other. They were said to be able to lift up to 300 pounds (140 kg) each. In November 1887 they were performing at Eugene Robinson’s Dime Museum and Theatre. In 1903 the brothers were withdrawn from exhibitions by the Warner family. Hiram died in Waltham, Massachusetts on March 16, 1905. Barney stopped working after his brother’s death. Their former manager Hanford Warner died in 1910. Barney died on May 31, 1912 at Waltham, Massachusetts at the Warner family home. The two are buried together in Mount Vernon, Ohio, under a gravestone marked Little Men. Newspapers from the time report them being buried in Waltham, Massachusetts. It is unknown when their bodies were moved to Ohio. The item “Antique WAINO & PLUTANO Wild Men of Borneo SIDESHOW CDV PHOTO Circus Performers” is in sale since Thursday, April 29, 2021. SEE BELOW MORE MORE DETAILS. An amazing circus book written by the world famous P. Tells the story of how Barnum obtained these amazing animals from around the world. Barnum was a successful American promoter who founded what became the Ringling Bros. And Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1871. Born on July 5, 1810, in Bethel, Connecticut, P. Barnum became a successful promoter after moving to New York City. From 1841 to 1868, he ran the Barnum American Museum, which featured the “Feejee Mermaid, ” “General Tom Thumb” and other oddities. In 1871, he launched the traveling spectacle that would eventually become the Ringling Bros. And Barnum & Bailey Circus. After an illustrious career, Barnum died in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on April 7, 1891. Barnum was born Phineas Taylor Barnum on July 5, 1810, in Bethel, Connecticut. A natural salesman, he was peddling snacks and cherry rum to soldiers by age 12. Barnum moved to New York City as a young man and tried his hand at a variety of businesses, including newspaper publishing and running a boarding house. Barnum’s American Museum. Barnum bought Scudder’s American Museum in lower Manhattan in 1841 and reopened it as Barnum’s American Museum. There he displayed the “Feejee Mermaid” and other oddities of dubious authenticity among what eventually expanded to a collection of 850,000 exhibits. In 1842, Barnum met 4-year-old Charles Sherwood Stratton, who stood 25 inches tall and weighed 15 pounds. Sensing another potential windfall, Barnum trained the boy to sing and dance and revealed him to the public as General Tom Thumb. The massive popularity of the exhibit led to a traveling tour of Europe, which included an audience with British monarch. In July 1865, Barnum’s American Museum burned to the ground in a massive fire. The promoter soon opened another museum at a nearby location, but this one also was demolished by a fire, in March 1868. The Greatest Show on Earth. After retiring from the museum business, Barnum teamed with circus owners Dan Castello and William C. Barnum’s Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan, and Hippodrome in 1871. Referring to the traveling spectacle as “The Greatest Show on Earth, ” Barnum took full ownership of the successful venture by 1875. In 1881, Barnum joined forces with fellow circus managers James A. Bailey and James L. The following year they introduced “Jumbo, ” an enormous 11 1/2-foot, 6 1/2-ton elephant from the Royal Zoological Society in London. As with many of Barnum’s previous exhibits, Jumbo was a hit with audiences, until his death in 1885. In 1887, an aging Barnum agreed to cede everyday control of the circus, which was rebranded as the Barnum & Bailey Greatest Show on Earth. Although he became famous for championing the weird and wacky, one of Barnum’s most successful ventures came with the promotion of Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind in the early 1850s. It’s HAND PIECED by several different hands using cotton, silk, velvet and wool fabrics in various shapes placed in blocks with cotton fabrics as backing. Each piece is surrounded by Turkey Track stitching in different colors of embroidery floss. Several pieces have florals, and one piece has a small silk American flag attached with French knots. EARLY 20TH CENTURY TERRELL JACOBS WILD ANIMAL CIRCUS ADVERTISING POSTER. Thank you for shopping with Bay Colony Antiques. We’re a third generation family owned business furnishing homes all over the world. We aggressively pursue important antiques, decorative arts, and objects of interest for our most discerning clients. With our highest compliments we’re proud to offer for sale the exceptional CA 1940 Terrell Jacobs Wild Animal Circus advertising poster. We really enjoy the smaller lesser know circus advertising opposed to the prolific monster that was Barnum & Bailey. Terrell Jacobs was born in Indiana and spent over 4 decades working across the world’s best circus shows & carnivals. He spent time with Barnum & Bailey and was a master of wild animal taming. It’s said Terrell performed with the largest number of lions, tigers, leopards etc. Once boasting a show of 50 wild animals. He is known throughout Indiana & the circus world as “Lion King” Terrell Jacobs started his own traveling show in 1944 called “Terrell Jacobs Wild Animal Circus” which is the subject of this early advertising poster. We pulled this out of a VFW hall in Tennessee where it sat undisturbed for many many years. The scene is rich with exotic animals lions, tigers, elephants, seals, horses, a dancing dog, and even a hippo. An ambitious man, the show also featured an art mix and wild west show. This three ring circus was short lived and sadly was dissolved a few years later when he and his wife divorced. This is 75 year old piece of paper that shows slight age wear as you’d expect to see. Many of these were lost to time and all things considered this one is in great condition. We note there are fold marks on the advertising, small areas of paper loss, and a few small areas with white paint on the paper. Not a big issue for something this rare and old but we have to point it out. If it was a deal breaker we simply wouldn’t offer it. We travel tens of thousands of miles every year and this is our favorite find in quite some time. The poster is in a pine frame with Masonite backing and a plexiglass cover for protection. The piece is 45 1/2″ wide x 31 1/2″ tall. Our warehousing facility located at 190 Chestnut St. Convenient downtown location just minutes away from I-91 and I-90 Masspike.
