RARE Trick Circus or Sideshow Horse by Swords Bros 1800s Composite Photo
Rare circa 1890 composite cabinet card showing a circus horse doing tricks, and holding signs. The sign in the middle says, “I CAN DO ANY TRICK”. 6.5″ x 4.25″ with blank back, as produced. Very good vintage condition overall; there’s a little crack in the image on the right side but this is just on the photo, it does not affect the mount, and it’s stable and flat. A little light but perfectly visible.

Antique Staffordshire Figure Girl Trick Rider Standing on Circus Horse c. 1860
Rare Circus Figure Girl Trick Rider. DESCRIPTION : A Girl Trick Rider Standing on Performing Horse’s back. SIZE : 7 7/8″H x 3 7/8″W x 2 D. ACQUIRED : April, 2005, from a known New England Dealer in Antique Staffordshire. III, page 107, fig a 1357B. MOULDING: The figure is in very good condition with attention to detail; in the fanning folds of the scarf behind, the plume in her bonnet, the soft ruffles to her skirt, and her crossed legs. More detail is seen in the horse’s head and face, with ears, muzzle and eyes well developed, along with a flowing mane and tail. There is a single repair to a crack in the separate flowered rein. The trick rider is also a separate figure as are the horse’s 2 legs, head, neck and tail. The girl’s nose appears have been chipped after firing as it is not under glaze. The vent hole is to the underside. There is moderate crazing, and two tight firing lines, both commensurate with the age of this piece. COLOURING : This is a “flat back” figure with the majority of the under glaze enamel colouring to the front, save the brilliant cobalt blue of her dress in the round. The pink reins are decorated with flower garlands. The older soft gold is in great condition and abundance, it has been used to outline the neck of her dress, the sash across her chest, the cuffs of her sleeves, and a solid horizontal line on the base. On the backside, in the absence of enamels, w e see the creamy blue-tinged glaze with pooling in the crevices of the design. This is a stunning, documented, antique figure from a private collection. Please take time to carefully view and magnify the 10 photographs provided. I have described this figure to the best of my ability, including all notes received from the previous dealer. I would be happy to answer any questions you might have. We carefully bubble-wrap and double-box all antique pottery for safe transit.
