CIRCUS in Country 8 Views, Set-up, Photographer Camera, Huge 1880s Antique Print
It depicts 10 views of the arrival, set-up and life of the circus in a country town. The views shown include the raising of the tent, part of the procession (horses and trick riders), a field day for the amateur photographer, elephants, horses, and the performance. It is very large (double folio size), measuring approximately 22 x 16 inches (56 x 40.5 cm). The picture fills most of the page, with a caption below. There is unrelated text/photos on the back of this print. The print has a fold in the middle, where it was folded into the magazine long ago. Note that the fold line is clean and undamaged, because it was “tipped” into the binding. This was a luxury binding technique of that era, because the double page prints were free of binding holes down the center. The print has a smudge on the caption over the word “THE”. VERY RARE Signed Antique Photo Black African Ameridan Circus Performer Barnum
Very rare photo of the Great Layton, an African American wire balancing performer in the late 1800s and early 1900s, shown here doing his act, with his advertising banner visible on the left. Layton appears to have signed the back of the photo in ink. I couldn’t find much info about him after that time. This is the only cabinet photo I have ever seen for sale of this performer. It was probably one of a small handful made as part of a promo for a small show. This listing shows a scan of an article I found online. The clipping is shown in this listing for reference only, and the original article is not included. My scan shows the front and back of the same photo, plus the scan of the article. Image including its mount is approximately 4.5″ x 3.5″.

Here is an extremely rare, 1860’s framed circus poster. Cooper was an original owner of Cooper and Bailey Circus, who merged with P. Consequently, Barnum and Bailey was formed. This poster is in great shape, no tears or water marks. It has creases where it was folded, but otherwise it’s in great shape. The color is bright, and it’s been professionally framed. It measures 21″ wide by 46″ tall. This is a must for the serious Circus collector.
