VERY RARE Signed Antique Photo African American Minstrel Circus Wire Performer

Very rare photo of the Great Layton, an African American wire balancing performer in the late 1800s and early 1900s, shown here doing his act, with his advertising banner visible on the left. Layton appears to have signed the back of the photo in ink. I couldn’t find much info about him after that time. This is the only cabinet photo I have ever seen for sale of this performer. It was probably one of a small handful made as part of a promo for a small show. This listing shows a scan of an article I found online. The clipping is shown in this listing for reference only, and the original article is not included. My scan shows the front and back of the same photo, plus the scan of the article. Rare original CDV, 4″ x 2.5″, in very good antique condition with some light mount edge wear. This is a difficult to find Eisenmann image. Condition: Image looks good, although there is some moisture related condition issues, including some waviness to the mount and separation of the paper layers of the mount, in the bottom 1/3 or the image or so. Weird and very rare cabinet card of “Baby Venus”, who was billed as a child “with a woman’s development”. However, this is a very rare sideshow image. A contemporary mention: Only child-woman known in the world and A human paradox, this information is given. Born in Massachusetts, Dec 18th, 1879. Height 3 feet, 7 inches. Address all communications to Col. Foster, Manager, 244 N. Obituary found in several newspapers says she died April 20, 1885: Ethel Ward, known to the world as Orinda, the Baby Venus, died in Chicago. She was born in Massachusetts in 1879 and physically was a matured woman. Overall in very good antique condition. 6.5″ x 4.25″ with blank, undamaged back. In good condition for age with minor age wear, old factory finish (with old rubs). With original ears and tail. The pig can stand, his elastics are good. Length approx 6.8.
