Wearing only a pair of sturdy gloves and a pad on his chest for minimal protection, Holtum would attempt to catch the speeding projectile with his hands. As soon as Holtum caught the cannonball he would throw it quickly to the ground. He had learnt early on that the ball would burn his flesh if not released immediately.

Photo measures 97 mm x 66 mm. Zhan was born in Fuzhou, China in the 1840s, though reports of the year vary from 1841 to 1847. His height was claimed to be over 8 feet (2.44 m), but there are no authoritative records. He left China in 1865 to travel to London where he appeared on stage, later travelling around Europe, and to the U. And Australia as “Chang the Chinese Giant”. Zhan received a good education in various countries, and developed a good understanding of ten languages. Kin Foo, the Chinese wife who accompanied Zhan from China, died in 1871, and Zhan later married Catherine Santley, whom he met in Sydney, Australia. They had two children: Edwin, born in 1877 in Shanghai, and Ernest, born in 1879 in Paris. Zhan died in Bournemouth in 1893, four months after his wife, aged around 50. His coffin was 8 feet 6 inches (2.6 m) long. Check out my other listings now for more Chinese antiques! Original antique CDV 1870s LEONA DARE trapeze artist & circus legend RARE photo
It was in the possession of one family since its creation in the 1870s (the “Minnie” whose name appears on the photo was the great-grandmother of the woman who recently passed away, from whose estate I acquired the CDV). 1855 was a world-famous trapeze artist and circus legend – look her up and you will be impressed with the many feats that made her famous. This is a VERY RARE photo, and few ever come up for sale. I’ve protected the original in an acid-free clear sleeve. The item “Original antique CDV 1870s LEONA DARE trapeze artist & circus legend RARE photo” is in sale since Tuesday, October 20, 2020.
