The famous New York photographer worked during the late 19th century in the Bowery district. He is most famous for his portraiture work focusing on human oddities from the Barnum & Bailey circus. Eisenmann did a portrait session with Ida Williams who toured as a fat lady with Sells Brothers Circus, Ringling Brothers, and Great Wallace Circus. As well as a sitter ID handwritten on the back of the card, it indicates Williams’s weight as 510 pounds and her age as 25. Measurements: 2.5″ x 4″. Photographer’s ink stamp on verso. VERY RARE Signed Antique Photo African American Minstrel Circus Wire Performer

VERY RARE Signed Antique Photo African American Minstrel Circus Wire Performer

VERY RARE Signed Antique Photo African American Minstrel Circus Wire Performer
Very rare photo of the Great Layton, an African American wire balancing performer in the late 1800s and early 1900s, shown here doing his act, with his advertising banner visible on the left. Layton appears to have signed the back of the photo in ink. I couldn’t find much info about him after that time. This is the only cabinet photo I have ever seen for sale of this performer. It was probably one of a small handful made as part of a promo for a small show. This listing shows a scan of an article I found online. The clipping is shown in this listing for reference only, and the original article is not included. My scan shows the front and back of the same photo, plus the scan of the article. Image including its mount is approximately 4.5″ x 3.5″. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Photographic Images\Photographs”. The seller is “jack_mord” and is located in this country: US. This item can be shipped to United States.

This is described as “The Pony Mathematician” (10780). Comparing old photos, it’s not Hans Clever, but this image is from around the same time. Maybe it’s at the Chicago’s World’s Fair? Nevertheless, it’s very rare and obviously cool. Benjamin is well known for his photojournalism, stereoview publishing company, the invention of a photo gun camera, as well as search and rescue work on Mount Washington. This is a stereoview (also known as a stereograph or stereoscope card). It is one of the first forms of 3D photography. The images were captured with a special stereoscopic camera, which has two lenses – simulating the view of our left and right eyes. The two, nearly identical pictures are then mounted next to each other (most commonly on a piece of cardstock, glued on as photographs or printed as lithographs). The image can then be seen in three dimensions when viewed through a device known as a stereoscope, stereopticon, and/or televiewer. Standard-size stereograph, measuring about 3.5 x 7 inches. All of my paper items are protected in archival-safe polypropylene sleeves and packaged in rig. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Photographic Images\Stereoviews & Stereoscopes”. The seller is “calamityphoto” and is located in this country: US. This item can be shipped worldwide.
