RARE Cole Bros Circus 1939 P. G. Lowery Band Black African American Photo
An original 10×7 vintage Photo from a large archive of circus photos acquired from the estate of circus historian and collector Robert F. Houston acquired a massive archive of circus memorabilia over a period of more than 50 years. He was also involved in building and repairing circus related items and was a member of Circus Model Builders International. Photo Overview An exceptionally rare shot! This photograph features the P. Lowery’s Sideshow Band, an integral part of the Cole Bros Circus. The band members, dressed in formal musical attire, including jackets and hats, are posed with their instruments, including trombones, saxophones, and a drum set. Two female performers are seated in the center, wearing stage costumes. This image was captured outdoors, evident by the grass underfoot, with a plain backdrop helping focus attention on the group. Lowery was a well-known African American band leader and cornet soloist who rose to fame in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His bands were fixtures in circus and vaudeville shows, bringing high-quality music to these venues. Rare original CDV, 4″ x 2.5″, in very good antique condition with some light mount edge wear. This is a difficult to find Eisenmann image. Condition: Image looks good, although there is some moisture related condition issues, including some waviness to the mount and separation of the paper layers of the mount, in the bottom 1/3 or the image or so. The back of the girl’s photo has no writing. It was hard to get a good scan… They are a bit overexposed. But all details are visible and are otherwise in very good. 6.5″ x 4.25″ each. RARE CIRCUS CDV – “EGYPTIAN PRINCESS” CIRCASSIAN WOMAN ON SWING – BY EISENMANN – You are considering one of the rare African women who took on the role of a Circassian Beauty during a time when this act was primarily dominated by white and an albino performers. Billed as the “Egyptian Princess” her portraits are quite rare to find. In this wonderful CDV Charles Eisenmann captured her in a playfully posed on a swing in his studio. Eisenman’s stamp can be seen below the photo and on the reverse of the mount. A great addition for your American Circus photo collection.
