VERY RARE Signed Antique Photo African American Minstrel Circus Wire Performer

VERY RARE Signed Antique Photo African American Minstrel Circus Wire Performer
Very rare photo of the Great Layton, an African American wire balancing performer in the late 1800s and early 1900s, shown here doing his act, with his advertising banner visible on the left. Layton appears to have signed the back of the photo in ink. I couldn’t find much info about him after that time. This is the only cabinet photo I have ever seen for sale of this performer. It was probably one of a small handful made as part of a promo for a small show. This listing shows a scan of an article I found online. The clipping is shown in this listing for reference only, and the original article is not included. My scan shows the front and back of the same photo, plus the scan of the article. Image including its mount is approximately 4.5″ x 3.5″. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Photographic Images\Photographs”. The seller is “jack_mord” and is located in this country: US. This item can be shipped to United States.

SIGNED CABINET CARD – CIRCUS BARNUM – MILLIE CHRISTINE – CONJOINED AFRICAN TWINS – You are considering an extremely rare cabinet photo of Millie Christine, the world famous conjoined African American twins who were originally born into slavery and displayed in circus sideshows. The image is by the renown photographer, Charles Eisenmann who photographed many of the early American circus perfromers during his career in New York City. The image is also on Eisenmann’s short lived chocolate colored mount, making this image even more rare. Cabinet photo has good contrast, tonal range and sharpness. Please note, this cabinet photo has their famous signature on the backside of the mount. CONDITION: Please view my detailed photos for the actual condition of the image and as part of my description. The cabinet photo has good contrast, tonal range and sharpness. The back of the mount has their signature of Millie Christine. Only a couple bumped corners can be seen on the top, which do not effect the image whatsoever. Here is a super rare and highly desirable image for your own personal collection of photography or to adorn your collection of tattoo history. This is part of a unique set of photos from “Captain Jim Moore’s Famous Shows” Carnival & Sideshow Traveling Show based out of Bridgeport, Pennsylvania. This original image is one of 5 from different carnival shows they set up across the country. He ran sideshows along with carnival rides and games. This photo features a great sideshow banner for the OLD PLANTATION SHOW. It featured African American performers. The man in the middle with a beard is Capt Jim Moore, the owner of the traveling carnival show. These photos are from the estate of Nettye Cameron who traveled with the circus (possibly as a manger for Mr Moore). These photos come from her estate, down the line from her great great nephew. She worked closely with the side show cast as she had a lot of photos with them and some were signed (will be offered up at a later date). Please check my other auctions for more vintage photos. In most cases, the actual original photos are much clearer than the posted images. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Photographic Images\Photographs”. The seller is “photofella” and is located in this country: US. This item can be shipped worldwide.
