RARE CIRCUS CDV – “EGYPTIAN PRINCESS” CIRCASSIAN WOMAN ON SWING – BY EISENMANN – You are considering one of the rare African women who took on the role of a Circassian Beauty during a time when this act was primarily dominated by white and an albino performers. Billed as the “Egyptian Princess” her portraits are quite rare to find. In this wonderful CDV Charles Eisenmann captured her in a playfully posed on a swing in his studio. This CDV features a rare image of Master Eli Bowen, a famous circus performer in the late 19th century. The image is a black and white matte finish and measures 3 x 4 inches. The CDV is an original one-of-a-kind piece and is part of the Pullman Brothers Museum in Cincinnati, Ohio. The photograph was taken in 1870 and is a prime example of a Freak Show Star. It is a first edition and features Eli Bowen and his wife Mattie Bowen in a portrait orientation. The CDV is made of cardboard and paper and is unframed. In this spectacular portrait, you can see the tight wire rope coiled next to this pint size performer dressed as the Greek God. Period notations and the date can be seen on the back of the mount.
