MINT & RARE CIRCUS CDV – SUPERB PHOTO OF “LITTLE VENUS” THE CHILD WIRE WALKER 1874 – Here is a rare performer you will rarely if ever see; “Little Venus” was a very accomplished tight wire walker at the age of 7 years old. In this spectacular portrait, you can see the tight wire rope coiled next to this pint size performer dressed as the Greek God. Period notations and the date can be seen on the back of the mount. The CDV is in mint antique condition. CONDITION: Please view my detailed photos for the actual condition of the image and as part of my description. The early CDV of one of the finest examples of a tight wire walker I have ever encountered. The print as well as the mount are in pristine condition. The photo remains bold and has the photographer’s back stamp. Period notations and the date can be seen on the backside of the mount. Antique CARTE DE VISITE (CDV) Photograph. Photography Studio: Brand’s Art Gallery. Subject: Arthur James Caley (1824 – February 12, 1889) was known professionally as Colonel Routh Goshen. Goshen gained fame by appearing in P. S American Museum and Barnum? S Circus as the tallest man in the world. His advertised measurements were 7? And 620 pounds, when in reality, he was most likely no more than 7? This CDV displays the large man gazing solemnly at the viewer from a seated position dressed as his Middle Eastern alias. His military uniform features elaborate braided epaulettes, various medals, a plumed helmet and a decorative sword. Appears to be signed by Colonel Routh Goshen in pencil on back. 4.25″ x 2.5″. Carte de Visite photo of Penny Farthing High Wheel Bicycle Trick Rider Harriet ” Big Hattie ” Martell (sometimes spelled Martel). In this photo, Hattie is balancing on her high wheel bicycle whose wheels are not propped up in any way and she is holding the handbars to her bicycle in her left hand. Harriet would get the nickname Big Hattie as she grew into her teens where she blossomed into a tall young lady. She often performed with her father, whose name I believe was George, and her brother, whose name I think was Peter. The three performed as The Martell Family whose specialty was penny farthing high wheel bicycle trick riding much like their contemporaries, The Stirk Family. There is a very light and barely noticeable surface smudge on the right side which can probably be cleaned off (although there is no need to). This is a very good historic item.
