Oregon Wonder Horse Circus Sideshow Antique Cabinet Card Vintage Photo

A marvelous ghostly image of a magical creature and a trainer. As you might expect, the Oregon Wonder Horses were an “oddity” of their time, they were common in circus sideshows, where promoters would undoubtedly sell them as some sort of genetic mutation. This rare breed of horse goes clear back to the 1880’s, and the story is almost as mythical as a unicorn. One stallion had a tail that measured 17 feet long and a mane that measured in at 14 feet. Pictured is Linus II, and was the only known offspring to get the feature from his father Linus I. Image from between 1894 -1900. Please refer to photos for condition. Measures 6.5″ X 4.75″. Cabinet Cards were a style of photograph first introduced in 1863 by Windsor & Bridge in London, the cabinet card is a photographic print mounted on card stock. The Cabinet card got its name from its suitability for display in parlors — especially in cabinets — and was a popular medium for family portraits. A wonderul image showing the large woman in all of her beauty posing partially at profile with one arm resting on a book. She is wearing the most beautiful pearl necklace. Likely a Bowery circus or sideshow performer of the era although I could not reference this specific image anywhere. Boasts Eisenmann photographer info at base and great backstamp on verso. In Excellent overall condition. Clean and crisp with only gentle signs of wear and foxing. No holes, rips, tears, creases or bends. (October 5, 1855 – December 8, 1927) was a famous. Photographer during the late 1880s who worked in the. Popular in this era, available to the middle class. Eisenmann also supplied Duke Tobacco Company. To stuff in their tobacco cans. Credits Eisenmann with being the most prolific and well known photographer when it comes to Cabinet cards. His work was the subject of a 1979 monograph. Monsters of the Gilded Age.
