Antique Circus Photograph Postcard Sargano Alicamousa Lion Tamer Black History
I have on offer.. A very rare original photo advertising card / postcard from the 1880s. The card shows “The Great” SARGANO ALICAMOUSA (John Humphreys) a West Indian LION TAMER who was born in 1859 in St. Possibly produced by a company with links to Lithgow and Glasgow. Alicamousa went to England with a British Naval Officer who befriended him on St. They then went to Africa and hunted for Lion cubs to bring back to England. Then worked throughout Europe as a Lion & Tiger trainer and tamer primarily for George Sanger. A newspaper report from 1885 states that a Black lion tamer was performing with Bostock and Wombwell’s Menagerie in Beverley and states how Sargasso. Enters the’Den of Lions’ and puts them through a series of performances. He wears three medals, and possesses great power over the’King of the Forest. He later got work in Astley’s Amphitheatre in Westminster Bridge Road, and then Sanger’s London theatre, riding an. Elephant in a stage show. He was perhaps most famous for an act that involved wrestling with a lion. The medals he wear were apparently won in Sedan. Photograph is 3″ x 5″ and will be sent packed in a hardback envelope. Very good used condition considering age some wear to the edges and corners. Please read the item description and study the photos as they also form part of the description. So please wait for invoice before paying if you win more than one lot. If you have any problems, let me know and I will do my upmost to fix them.
