German Early 20th Century Clown Automaton. This is a wonderful rare and fully working German automaton clown. Probably originally used as a shop window display, the clown is made of papier mache and must date to the early part of the 20th Century. Wonderful workings inside, when switched on the right arm moves up and down and the head nods, which triggers the glass eyes to move on the counter weight. Wonderful piece of vintage shop display – the work has german inscriptions written on the clowns belly. Whilst fully working in its current state we would request it was re-wired professionaly for safety reasons. The clown measures 25″ tall x 19″ wide. The clothing appears original if a little grubby. A MOST INTRIGUING ANTIQUE c1920’s CARNIVAL OR CIRCUS (POSSIBLY SIDESHOW) DISPLAY CASE MADE OUT OF WOOD AND FEATURING A MIRRORED BACK WITH THREE (3) GLASS PANELS THAT SLIDE IN FROM THE TOP AND WAS LIGHTED AT SOME POINT IN TIME. THERE ARE TWO (2) TIERS OF GLASS SHELVES THAT GO WITH THIS BUT ONLY ONE (1) IS SHOWN IN THE PICTURES. THERE IS ALSO A GOLD FINIAL THAT RESTS ON THE TOP OF THE COVER. WE HAD TO INSTALL AN LED LIGHT UNDERNEATH THE TOP BUT WE SAVED THE ORIGINAL LIGHT AND HOUSING. WE JUST PLACED THE NEW ONE ON TOP OF THE OTHER AS THEY DO NOT MAKE THE TYPE OF LIGHT BULB ANYMORE NEEDED TO MAKE IT WORK. THERE WAS NO FRONT GLASS WHEN WE FOUND THIS PIECE SO WE HAD A VERY THIN ONE MADE TO MATCH THE OTHER ORIGINAL THIN GLASS PANELS. IT MEASURES 55″ TALL AND 23 1/2″ WIDE AND 22 1/2 DEEP.
