STAFFORDSHIRE FORTUNE TELLER Flat Back Arbor Figurine 12.5 Gypsy Palm Reader
STAFFORDSHIRE FORTUNE TELLER FIGURINE. It depicts two women in flowing dresses surrounded by an abundant grape-vined arbor, a common design element in Staffordshire pieces of the era. The older woman is a gypsy palm reader foretelling the future of a seated young maiden who has taken a break from playing her lute. Her distinctive blue shoes are particularly charming and indicate that if additional colors or details were present, they have since worn away. The figurine is titled below the women’s feet, “FORTUNE TELLER”. Perhaps the little child behind the fortune teller is who she sees in her client’s future. It measures 12 1/2 inches tall by 9 1/8 inches wide by approximately 3 inches deep. There are 6’spaghetti’ textured flowers around the arbor and both ladies’ eyebrows deserve a Zoom! The “H” mark underneath is likely that of the decorator or a workshop identifier rather than a formal pottery mark because most Staffordshire figurines of this period were unmarked. The flat back lacking decoration is also typical for ease of display on a narrow mantle or similar tight spot. Considering the size, subject rarity, and age of at least 144 years old, the chips to both noses are minor condition issues easy to overlook. This piece has not been restored nor has the hand painting been touched up. I like these ladies just the way they are since those blue shoes are everything! Circus cabinet photo Jugglers The Ader Brothers Boys back to back Juggling
Cabinet photo of Circus Jugglers The Ader Brothers (at the time this photo was taken, they had added another performer to their group and named themselves The Ader Trio though only two of the three in the group at thew time are pictured). This cabinet photo shows two boys in costume who are back to back with the back of their heads nearly touching. The boys are not only juggling pins in the air but they are exchanging them from one boy to the other as you can see two pins in the air above both their heads. If they were just juggling their own pins, those ones in the air would come crashing down on their heads. The back of the mount has handwriting identifying these boys as being part of the Ader Trio which were a family of jugglers from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Condition – used/preowned, please read the condition section. Location – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Size (including mount) – 5 and 1/8 inches wide and 7 and 3/16 inches high.
