Forepaugh Sells Bros Circus Wellston Ohio Elephants SEE BACK 1898 c1900s Photo
An original 7×5 antique photo from a large archive of Adam Forepaugh – Sells Bros. Circus photos acquired from the estate of a collector. This is a unique antique/vintage silver gelatin photograph — it is not a modern print. Photo Overview In downtown Wellston, Ohio, on 28 April 1898, a dozen elephants from the Forepaugh-Sells Bros Circus stride trunk-to-tail along the main street, each wearing ornate blankets and carrying mahouts in parade howdahs. The African bulls Mike and Topsy head the line, while spectators in high-crowned hats and Victorian dresses crowd the boardwalks before brick commercial blocks and clapboard boarding houses, capturing a vivid slice of Gilded Age small-town America. The Forepaugh-Sells combination, formed in 1896, became famous for these free morning parades that advertised the afternoon and evening shows. Own this rare window into America’s golden era of traveling entertainment before another collector claims it. Text Present Back, upper center: Adam Forepaugh- Sells Bros. Ohio – April 28, 1898. Back, body of note: The two African bulls were from the Sells Show before they combined with Forepaugh, and were a male and female named Mike and Topsy, but Sells had special paper on them, billing them as Congo & Vespa. 1896 was first year Forepaugh-Sells Combo. Don’t know when Topsy died, but she disappeared from the scene by very early 1900s-then just Mike can be seen in the pix. He is the big one that is last in line in this pix. In early 1908 Billboard, it is mentioned that Mike had died there. He is said to have been ten feet four in. 19, 1907, from the effects of a burn received in a train wreck. Bailey had bought the Forepaugh-Sells Bros. Please see photos for scans of the surface. Photo may have natural curling or other imperfections from age.

We do our best to describe each item in detail and provide pictures that feature any defects or issues that we are aware of. We are not experts, just collectors and we welcome questions and comments. Here is a pair of antique Schoenhut wooden circus elephants and two props. Both elephants have glass eyes. They are missing some paint to the tusks. One elephant still has its trunk tip intact and good tight joints. The other has a damaged tip and joints that are a bit loose. There is wear to the barrel and ball as seen. The barrel is missing the decal. All in all, they are nice old toys. Other buyers, please let us know if you would like an invoice. The calculator is usually right on, based on the size and weight entered. We only ask that you give us a chance to make it right before you leave negative or neutral feedback or low DSR ratings.

RARE Fulmer Estate B&W PRESS PHOTO PACK 1950s MILLS Bros CIRCUS Elephants COA
ONE OF A KIND PRESS PHOTO PACK WITH NEGATIVES from a very important estate in Florida! You get eight photos and the negatives to company them. All in the original packet. Based on the number of this packet and where it was stored in the estate I’m dating this between 1954 – 1955 is my best guess. I have included some history about the Mills Brothers Circus in the photos. The photos and the negatives are both in good condition for reprints. Photographer for the city of Clearwater for over half a century. Also a Navy enlisted photographer during WW2. After cleaning out the residence & studio in 2014, we have been sorting through over 100,000 photographs for the last 10 years, and are finally offering some of the best ones up for sale individually. We hope to Bring recognition to his life’s work as well as to find homes for the history of an entire city as documented by the city photographer. The photographs include everything you would’ve expected a city photographer to have been present for, from weddings, to new construction, aerial photographs, sporting events, school events, press photography, police, Jaycees, and a really nice, but VERY LIMITED collection of nude photographs from a nudist camp that is still in operation here today. Even more limited, there were a handful of war photographs and film that we were able to save, but it was not much as unfortunately for some reason, he had stored the war photographs outside where they were exposed to the weather, and sadly they had been completely destroyed. The photos that are being offered here were well preserved, found inside the home and studio, in a cool, dry, cellar type setting. This is quite a project for only two curators, so please follow us, and be patient as we slowly unveil the contents of this massive estate. And always, if you see something that you like, please make an offer!
