Offering for sale a vintage, possibly antique, circus wagon and animals. The animals do not appear to be a set, but they are charming together. The two camels stand approximately 5 tall. The horse stands approximately 3.5 tall. The monkey stands about 5 tall. It appears it is a wind-up toy, but the winder is missing. The pig is about 2 tall. All of the above mentioned toys have a flocked texture. Both camels have a Made in Germany sticker. The white goat and small horse pictured together are made of plastic, but appear to have age to them. The circus wagon is primitively made, but is sturdy. There is slight crackling and pealing to the paint, giving a charming patina. The item “Antique Toy Circus Wagon & Animals Made in Germany” is in sale since Thursday, June 17, 2021. THIS SALE IS FOR ONE FIGURE ONLY. This captivating, entirely hand-sculpted ceramic figure of a daredevil male basset hound leaping through a hoop from one star spangled riser to another is signed Blair 1993 and measures 8 tall x 3 1/2 x 10 and has an irresistable charm. Largely self-taught, for over 40 years he produced whimsical, hand crafted figures for friends and family. Dogs were his favorite subject (he knew these from the ground up as well: he and his wife were obedience trainers/ companion dog trainers) and he imbues them with the joy and personality that only one who loves dogs can fully appreciate. The figure is dusty and he is missing his tail. See our other sales for more examples from this artists delightful oeuvre. Antique WAINO & PLUTANO Wild Men of Borneo SIDESHOW CDV PHOTO Circus Performers
Up for sale is this antique cdv circus/sideshow photo of Waino & Plutano, the Wild Men of Borneo. The cdv has some moderate soiling and wear as depicted in the scans. It measures approximately 3 7/8 inches by 2 3/8 inches and most likely dates to sometime around the 1860’s-1870’s. Please look at the scans to further note the condition. The Wild Men of Borneo, Waino and Plutanor, were a pair of exceptionally strong dwarf brothers who were most famously associated with P. Barnum and his freak show exhibitions. Waino and Plutanor were actually Hiram W. And Barney Davis, two mentally disabled brothers from Pleasant Township, Knox County, Ohio farm, born in 1825 in England and 1827 in Ohio respectively. The 1850 census for them suggests they were born slightly later in 1829 and 1831. Their parents were David Harrison Davis and Catherine Blydenburgh. After their father’s death in 1842, their mother remarried to William Porter. They were each 40 inches tall (100cm) and weighed about 45 pounds (20kg), yet could perform feats of great strength such as lifting heavy weights and wrestling with audience members on stage. Discovered and subsequently promoted by a traveling showman known as Doctor Warner in 1852, Hiram and Barney were given new names, Waino and Plutanor, and a sensational back story they were said to be from the island of Borneo, where they had been captured after a great struggle with armed sailors. They initially had modest success, but at least one newspaper believed them to be dwarves from the United States. The two soon went on to be exhibited at state fairs across the United States. At the time of the 1860 census they were living in Somerville, Massachusetts in the household of Henry Harvey, a showman. At some point in the next few years management of the pair was transferred to a relative of Doctor Warner, Hanford A. In January 1877 they were performing at the New American Museum located in Manhattan. In June 1880 at the time of the federal census, they were touring with William C. Coup’s circus and were enumerated under their assumed identities. By 1882 Waino and Plutanor became involved with P. Barnum and his traveling exhibitions. Their exhibitions primarily consisted of performing acts of great strength, such as lifting adult audience members and wrestling with both audience members and each other. They were said to be able to lift up to 300 pounds (140 kg) each. In November 1887 they were performing at Eugene Robinson’s Dime Museum and Theatre. In 1903 the brothers were withdrawn from exhibitions by the Warner family. Hiram died in Waltham, Massachusetts on March 16, 1905. Barney stopped working after his brother’s death. Their former manager Hanford Warner died in 1910. Barney died on May 31, 1912 at Waltham, Massachusetts at the Warner family home. The two are buried together in Mount Vernon, Ohio, under a gravestone marked Little Men. Newspapers from the time report them being buried in Waltham, Massachusetts. It is unknown when their bodies were moved to Ohio. The item “Antique WAINO & PLUTANO Wild Men of Borneo SIDESHOW CDV PHOTO Circus Performers” is in sale since Thursday, April 29, 2021. RARE Vintage CIRCUS THEME Wooden Wall Hanging with Hand Painted Clown In Relief
This is an absolutely stunning, vintage wall hanging, made entirely of wood. It has a circletop shaped frame, hand painted, which measures 24″ in length, with a base width of 16″, and a depth of 1. The background is a textured, flat colour transfer, which gives the impression of being an oil painting, and features the circus ring, with a ring master, a secondary clown, and above this, the crowd watching on from their seats. Also a high wire can be seen towards the rear of the ring. Central to this is the carved wood figure, raised in relief, of BARIOS the CLOWN, which has been hand painted. He is seen spinning a ball on the end of a finger on his right hand, whilst balancing a larger ball on the end of his pipe & balancing his body on another ball, all on one foot. Truly, this is THE ART OF CLOWNING. SO RARE, THAT I HAVEN’T SEEN ITS LIKE ANYWHERE, APART FROM MY OTHER LISTING, WHICH FOLLOWS THIS ONE. If you have a question… Please do ask it. Antique MILLIE & CHRISTINE Conjoined Twins SIDESHOW CDV Photo P T Barnum Circus
Up for sale is this rare antique cdv circus/sideshow photo of the conjoined twins Millie and Christine. The twins were born into slavery in Whiteville, North Carolina in 1851. The twins weren’t emancipated until after the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. Shortly after that, they joined P. Barnum’s circus where they performed as The Two Headed Nightingale. The cdv is in overall good condition with a little fading to the photo and some minor signs of wear and age. It measures approximately 4 1/8 inches by 2 3/8 inches and most likely dates to sometime around the 1870’s or late 1860’s. Please look at the scans to further note the condition. African-American conjoined twins and performers (18511912). Millie and Christine McKoy (July 11, 1851 October 8, 1912) were African-American conjoined twins who went by the stage names “The Carolina Twins”, “The Two-Headed Nightingale” and “The Eighth Wonder of the World”. The twins traveled throughout the world performing song and dance for entertainment, overcoming years of slavery, forced medical observations, and forced participation in fairs and freak shows. Millie and Christine (the “Carolina Twins”) were born in Whiteville, North Carolina on July 11, 1851, to Jacob and Monemia McKoy who were slaves of blacksmith, Jabez McKay. The McKay farm was near the town of Whiteville. Prior to the sisters’ birth, their mother had borne seven other children, five boys and two girls, all of ordinary size and form. The twins were conjoined at the lower spine and stood at an approximately 90-degree angle to each other. Pervis and McKay reached an agreement where Pervis exhibited the girls for pay and then paid a percentage to McKay. Brower first exhibited the twins at North Carolina’s first state fair, held in 1853. They were called “freaks of nature”. The North Carolina State Fair was a success for Brower and the Carolina Twins; however, Brower’s fortune changed over the next months. Brower accepted, sent the twins on to the Texan, and then waited several days for the deeds before realizing that he had been swindled. Since Brower was left destitute, Smith was given the promissory note and was now the owner of the Carolina Twins. Millie and Christine were handled by several managers before being reclaimed by Smith in Britain in 1857. On January 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation ended their slave status and they were no longer anyone’s property. Before their emancipation, the girls had been showcased in fairs and freak shows in several U. Cities and even Montreal, Canada. Smith traveled to Britain to collect the girls and brought with him their mother, Monemia, from whom they had been separated. He and his wife provided the twins with an education and taught them to speak five languages, dance, play music, and sing. During their time in Britain, they met Queen Victoria. For the rest of the century, the twins enjoyed a successful career as “The Two-Headed Nightingale”, and appeared with the Barnum circus. Joanne Fish Martell, former court reporter, discovered a memoir written by the girls at the age of 17 and with that and other sources, created her book Millie-Christine: Fearfully and Wonderfully Made, which was published in 2000. The twins’ motto was “As God decreed, we agreed, ” and they strove to turn impediments into assets. As toddlers, they were clumsy and fell down quite frequently. They eventually developed a sideways walk that turned into a crowd-pleasing dance style. They were able to master keyboard duets with one soprano and one alto voice, and learned to harmonize. When they were in their 30s, the twins moved back to the farm where they were born, which their father had bought from Jabez McKay and left to them. On October 8, 1912, Millie and Christine died at age 61 of tuberculosis; Christine died 12 hours after her sister. They were buried in unmarked graves but in 1969 they were moved to a cemetery in Whiteville. An undated and unsigned biography of the sisters was written around 1905. It includes events from their childhood, their kidnapping and movement to England, and finally their return to the United States and a bit of their life afterwards. The writing is only 22 pages long and contains letters from various physicians attesting to the genuine nature of the twins’ conjoined physiology. At the end of the work, the girls answer the question as to whether they are one person or two, saying “Although we speak of ourselves in the plural we feel as but one person; in fact as such we have ever been regarded, although we bear the names Millie and Christina” (McKoy, 20).
