Antique Tiger 1870 F. Wright & Son Taunton MA Stone Ware Jug PT Barnum Circus. Simply amazing early Stone Ware Jug from F. Wright & Son of Taunton, MA. This particular jug has a tiger stenciled onto it. The exciting part other than the fact that myself and most people have never seen a tiger on a jug is how it got there. Its reported that they are connected to the inaugural PT Barnum Circus! The jug is in fantastic shape with no cracks. Only small chips around the mouth. Considering its 150 years old its amazing! Please view photos carefully for accurate condition portrayal. This is a superb and superbly rare early American Stone Ware jug. Chances are you will never see another one. If you collect Stone Ware dont pass this opportunity up. Perfect gift for the collector in your life. Now for the exciting part. Please note this information is not the gospel. This may or may not be the case but it sure makes sense. The origin of the Tiger on a piece of Massachusetts stoneware is unknown, but other circus animals (elephants, zebras, etc) have appeared on decorated pieces. On June 7, 1871, the first traveling circus performed in nearby Middleborough (MA), about 9 miles east of Taunton. The grand spectacle was none other than P. T Barnum’s Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan & Hippodrome in its very first year of operation. Barnum’s “Menagerie” included a number of exotic caged animals including Bengal Tigers, Leopards, Panthers and Jaguars. Up for sale is this very rare antique late 1800’s chapbook John Foster’s Barnum and London Great Circus Songster. The book is softcover in it’s original wrappers and has 32 pages. The front cover has a great hand colored illustration. The covers have some wear as illustrated in the photos. There is a tiny tear about half an inch in length along the bottom portion of the fold line of the spine, however the covers are well attached and the binding of the book is good. The pages are lightly toned from with some occasional light foxing. There is a name lightly penciled on the inside and outside of the back cover. There is the occasional page with some kind of other small imperfection such as a tiny stain, light wrinkle, creased page corner, small chip or tear, etc. The book is undated but is circa the last quarter of the 1800’s. All in all a really nice and rare circus songster chapbook. The book measures approximately 6 3/4 inches by 4 1/8 inches. EARLY 20TH CENTURY BARNUM & BAILEY LIFE SIZE DONKEY – CIRCUS ODDITY. Thank you for shopping with Bay Colony Antiques. We’re a third generation family owned business furnishing homes all over the world. We aggressively pursue important antiques, decorative arts, and objects of interest for our most discerning clients. Were delighted to offer for sale this wonderful early 20th century life size woolen donkey. This came to us from a lovely Connecticut estate of long time circus memorabilia collectors. We originally believed we were looking at an early Steiff ride on toy and albeit there are similarities, this example proves much more complex and features different construction techniques. This would have originally been mounted on an iron base as evident from under the hooves. The body is wool over what looks to be a fiberglass or composite frame. The tail possess it’s original spring and overall the donkey is in great condition. We note minimal discoloration in the white wool with a small loss to the underbelly. The donkey measures 56″ from head to tail, 16″ wide and stands 46 tall. Our warehousing facility located at 190 Chestnut St. Convenient downtown location just minutes away from I-91 and I-90 Masspike. We are a wholly owned family business in our third decade of continuous operation. And Barnum & Bailey Circus antique wooden wagon wheel. I acquired this wheel from a very trusted circus memorabilia dealer in approximately 1991. He provided me with a typewritten letter (now misplaced) from the person who restored the wheel, explaining that it was salvaged out of the old Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus equipment graveyard in Sarasota, FL many years prior. You can see more about the grave yard if you search online for Ringling/Barnum Winter Quarters Graveyard, Dyer Reynolds photos. The wheel has been kept in my home since 1991. It is in good structural condition. The paint has chipped or worn away in some areas (see pics). The wheel was repainted during restoration prior to my ownership. It is an awesome novelty item from a bygone era of The Greatest Show On Earth. And Barnum & Bailey Circus went out of business in 2017 so this is now a. I don’t know where you could find another. The wheel would make an amazing glass top coffee table or prop for home or office. What a unique Christmas gift! GMHC Gay Mens Health Crisis AIDS HIV poster Kramer NYC circus Ringling Barnum
Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) was founded in 1982 in New York City by Nathan Fain, Larry Kramer , Lawrence D. Mass, Paul Popham, Paul Rapoport and Edmund White to mobilize the community about the dangers of a new disease affecting primarily gay men but swiftly moving into all demographics. AIDS was not well understood in 1983 and the poster also includes Kaposis Sarcoma because the disease was still being called “gay cancer” at that time. This poster/flyer/mailer announces the first major AIDS fundraising event. Held on April 30, 1983 in New York City at Madison Square Garden, The Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus was presented by GMHC. GMHC described the performance as “The biggest gay event of all time” and “A benefit to fight AIDS/ Kaposis Sarcoma”. This item has its original folds making it four panels in envelope size. There are no other creases or tears or stains or fading. Please note: This is the original poster/mailer/flyer. It is NOT the original painting/drawing featured on the poster. I don’t know if that even exists anywhere or who the artist is. The item “GMHC Gay Mens Health Crisis AIDS HIV poster Kramer NYC circus Ringling Barnum” is in sale since Wednesday, April 12, 2017. An original turn of the 19th century museum quality American Circus figure head last originating from an old Victorian House in Bridgeport, CT, home of P. Barnum of the world famous Barnum & Bailey Circus, measuring approximately 38 inches in circumference and 12 5/8 inches tall with an approximate weight of 20.2 pounds. Thanks for looking at this amazing piece of American Circus history. Barnum (July 5, 1810 April 7, 1891) was an American showman and businessman remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes and for founding the Barnum & Bailey Circus. Barnum is widely, but erroneously, credited with coining the phrase “There’s a sucker born every minute”. Born in Bethel, Connecticut, Barnum became a small-business owner in his early twenties, and founded a weekly newspaper, before moving to New York City in 1834. He embarked on an entertainment career, first with a variety troupe called “Barnum’s Grand Scientific and Musical Theater”, and soon after by purchasing Scudder’s American Museum, which he renamed after himself. Barnum used the museum as a platform to promote hoaxes and human curiosities such as the Feejee mermaid and General Tom Thumb. After economic reversals due to bad investments in the 1850s, and years of litigation and public humiliation, he used a lecture tour, mostly as a temperance speaker, to emerge from debt. His museum added America’s first aquarium and expanded the wax-figure department. Barnum served two terms in the Connecticut legislature in 1865 as a Republican for Fairfield. With the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution over slavery and African-American suffrage, Barnum spoke before the legislature and said, A human soul, that God has created and Christ died for, is not to be trifled with. It may tenant the body of a Chinaman, a Turk, an Arab or a Hottentot it is still an immortal spirit. Elected in 1875 as Mayor of Bridgeport, Connecticut, he worked to improve the water supply, bring gas lighting to streets, and enforce liquor and prostitution laws. Barnum was instrumental in starting Bridgeport Hospital, founded in 1878, and was its first president. The circus business was the source of much of his enduring fame. Barnum’s Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan & Hippodrome”, a traveling circus, menagerie and museum of “freaks, which adopted many names over the years. Barnum died in his sleep at home in 1891, and was buried in Mountain Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport, which he designed himself.
