Circus Theatre Antique Hand Colored Photograph Boy Clown Fool Fox Terrier Dog
This listing is for the relatively large antique hand colored photograph that you see in the photos. I think that the image is that of a boy or young man dressed as a clown or a fool with what looks to me to be a fox terrier dog. The photos show a name and what looks like a description of or instructions for the hand coloring of the photo that is written on the back of the board that the photo is against in the frame. The frame measures close to 18 ½ by 22 5/8 inches. The area of the photo exposed by the frame measures close to 15 ¼ by 19 ¼ inches. The framed photo weighs close to 4 pounds 5 ounces. The photo is on a relatively thin paper. The photo is behind glass so there are some reflections in my photos. The back is held in place with 6 antique iron square nails which look like they could be hand made to me. I have provided a photo of one. It could use at least a couple of more nails. The condition is much like you see it in the photos and video. The frame has a bit of damage at a corner that you can see in a close-up. There is a little whitish unknown substance on the frame. The frame might benefit from a cleaning. The cardboard that the photo is against is somewhat darkened by age and has become fragile and prone to crumble. The paper has also been affected by time and being against the board. When I tried to straighten a small bent over corner of the paper it broke off. As you can see, the edges of the paper are damaged and there is a short tear along an edge. Also, there is a little damage on the inside of the paper that looks like several tiny dents with one that has broken through the paper slightly. Near the top left and at the bottom left and right corners the shape of the paper is deformed. The cardboard backing on the frame is damaged. Otherwise, this item is generally fine and as shown. My photos and video should give you a good idea of its general condition. I guarantee this photo to be as described and represented by the photos video. The photos are part of the description. Please look at all of them. Please know that the lighting in my photos is uneven and that there might be shadows or reflections. The colors on my monitor look close to but not exactly like the actual colors. Different monitors may show different colors. I often say that an item measures or weighs “close to” because in my opinion no measurements are exact and some things are difficult to measure. Often, I have a double wall box custom made for larger items and that might result in a short delay. When I use packing peanuts, they are usually biodegradable. Sometimes, I use used boxes. PHOTO CARD FRANK LENTINI THREE LEGGED WONDER BARNUM BAILEY CONEY ISLAND ODDITY. Frank was born Francesco Lentini on May 18th, 1889, in Rosolini, Sicily. He was the fifth of twelve children. Although later known as “The Three Legged Man, ” Frank actually had several additional body parts. These included a full-sized leg extending from his right hip, another foot protruding from his third leg’s knee, and a second set of male genitals. At four months old, his parents, Natale and Giovanna, took him to a specialist to determine the possibility of amputating his third leg. However, the specialist determined that Frank was, in fact, conjoined to a parasitic twin. His third leg was attached to his spine, making it impossible to remove. Barnum was already exhibiting a three-legged man, the German-born George Lippert. But Frank soon eclipsed Lippert in popularity. While he was still a boy, Frank began touring with the Ringling Brothers. In 1906, he debuted with P. Barnum’s circus at Madison Square Garden. Promotional posters called him The Three Legged Sicilian, The Greatest Medical Wonder of All Time, or just The Great Lentini. When Frank Lentini joined the circus, he quickly became one of America’s most popular sideshow performers, along with The Bearded Lady, General Tom Thumb, and The Elephant Man. Today, we would consider the practice of exhibiting people with physical deformities to be exploitive. But the circus offered Frank and other sideshow performers not just the opportunity to make a living but also to become a celebrity. During his career, Frank toured with every major circus in America as well as Coney Island sideshows. He became so successful he even toured as his own headlining act. He became a U. Citizen at age 30. In 1935, Frank and Theresa separated. He lived with another woman, Helen Shupe, for the remainder of his days. Lentini died in 1966 from lung failure at the age of 77.
