ORIGINAL 1800’s Admiral Dot CDV Vintage Carnival San Francisco Antique Circus
ORIGINAL / NOT A REPRODUCTION. This is a museum caliber find. Carte-de-visite photograph of “Admiral Dot”, the stage name of Leopold Kahn, a dwarf who performed in. This photograph by the studio of Henry Bradley and William Rulofson (soon to publish Muybridge’s Yosemite views) may have been taken during Kahn’s San Francisco debut as he appears much younger than in later photos. Clean with minimal edge wear and no signs of creasing. A unique piece of American history. Measures approximately 4.2 inches high by 2.5 inches wide. CDV is by Bradley & Rulofson. San Francisco, approximately 1869. Ships 1st class to the lower 48 states only. Born to San Francisco German-Jewish parents (his mother was committed to an insane asylum), Kahn began his career in 1869, while still a child, when he was “discovered” by Barnum while on vacation in California. Dubbing him Admiral Dot, “the El Dorado Elf”, Barnum dressed the boy in a diminutive Naval officer’s uniform and, exhibited him for three weeks to local residents before taking him to New York, where Kahn eventually settled, married and raised a family.
