GMHC Gay Mens Health Crisis AIDS HIV poster Kramer NYC circus Ringling Barnum
Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) was founded in 1982 in New York City by Nathan Fain, Larry Kramer , Lawrence D. Mass, Paul Popham, Paul Rapoport and Edmund White to mobilize the community about the dangers of a new disease affecting primarily gay men but swiftly moving into all demographics. AIDS was not well understood in 1983 and the poster also includes Kaposis Sarcoma because the disease was still being called “gay cancer” at that time. This poster/flyer/mailer announces the first major AIDS fundraising event. Held on April 30, 1983 in New York City at Madison Square Garden, The Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus was presented by GMHC. GMHC described the performance as “The biggest gay event of all time” and “A benefit to fight AIDS/ Kaposis Sarcoma”. This item has its original folds making it four panels in envelope size. There are no other creases or tears or stains or fading. Please note: This is the original poster/mailer/flyer. It is NOT the original painting/drawing featured on the poster. I don’t know if that even exists anywhere or who the artist is. The item “GMHC Gay Mens Health Crisis AIDS HIV poster Kramer NYC circus Ringling Barnum” is in sale since Wednesday, April 12, 2017. The prominent features of this play were the circus parade and the performance in the ring, which introduced some of the best riders and gymnasts known to the profession.
