Antique 1915 Society Circus Program Rochester New York Public Health Fundraiser
Antique 1915 Society Circus Program Rochester New York Public Health Fundraiser. This original program comes from the “Society Circus, ” a high-society charitable event held in Rochester, New York, circa 1915. It was organized by the Rochester Public Health Association as a benefit to support public health efforts-most notably education and treatment related to tuberculosis and child hygiene. This was not a commercial circus, but a full theatrical production starring local Rochester citizens, including doctors, civic leaders, and prominent families. The ringmaster was Mr. Culver, and the cast included over 70 named performers. The program features a full lineup of creative displays, such as. “Beating Them to a Frazzle” – a spoof on Smithsonian exhibitions. Scroodub Plays at Golf – comedic local satire. Aerial acts, animal parodies, and humorous sideshows. Supported Rochester’s early public health movement. Reflects civic engagement of upper-class citizens in the 1910s. Includes ads for local businesses Selden Car, Hotel Seneca, Merchants Bank, etc. Printed by Union and Advertiser Press, Rochester, NY. Loose-bound with original red cord. 12.5″ tall by 8.25″ wide. Wonderful graphic elements including a circus clown, stunt rider, and black poodle. A rare and charming artifact from Rochester’s social and medical history-ideal for collectors of antique ephemera, vintage circuses, or New York regional memorabilia. All our items are kept in a smoke-free and pet-free environment. We take great pride in the safe packaging we provide for every item we sell.

Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) was founded in 1982 in New York City by Nathan Fain, Larry Kramer , Lawrence D. Mass, Paul Popham, Paul Rapoport and Edmund White to mobilize the community about the dangers of a new disease affecting primarily gay men but swiftly moving into all demographics. AIDS was not well understood in 1983 and the poster also includes Kaposis Sarcoma because the disease was still being called “gay cancer” at that time. This poster/flyer/mailer announces the first major AIDS fundraising event. Held on April 30, 1983 in New York City at Madison Square Garden, The Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus was presented by GMHC. GMHC described the performance as “The biggest gay event of all time” and “A benefit to fight AIDS/ Kaposis Sarcoma”. This item has its original folds making it four panels in envelope size. There are no other creases or tears or stains or fading. Please note: This is the original poster/mailer/flyer. It is NOT the original painting/drawing featured on the poster.
