This was an estate sale find. A lady said that her grandmother made this a long while ago. Exact age is unknown. It’s made of papier-mache and is handmade and hand painted. Antique Handmade c 1900 5 piece Circus Train German Animals Cage Folk Ringling

Antique Early 1900s Handmade Wooden Folk Art! 3 car red train, each with doors that open. Metal tacks hold doors closed, and at one time, each was secured by leather hinges. One car’s hinges remain intact. Bars on these large cages were fashioned with threaded string that was painted yellow. 4 wheels, all wood and painted silver, held in place by silver tacks Wood is likely pine. Paint, of course, is oil-based and wheels are likely lead-based. First car has wooden slider in between cages. Approximately 8″ l x 3.5″ w x 5 h. With divider, each cage measures about 3.5 long. Hinges for door are broken, but is held in place with tack. Found carrying warthog and hyena. Second Car measures approx. 8.25″ l x 3.5″ w x 5.75 h. In the best shape of all three cars. Found carrying lion and cubs. Third Car measures approx 7.75″ l x 3.5″w’ 5.75 h. These cars have remnants of each having held a sign at one time. Pull cart with wooden bars and Ringling Bros/ Barnum & Bailey Billboard!! Approximately 4″ x 3″ x 4. With sign, overall height is 7. Wheels are metal, with fashioned metal pull handle and hitch. Wooden cage has small wooden bars and door that opens and closes!!! 4″ x 3″ x 3.25. Found with small bear. 10 animals in all!!! Warthog–3.5″ l x 2.25″ h x 0.75 w. Hyena–4″ l x 2″ h x. Tiger–5″ l x 2″ t x 1 w. Male Lion-5″l x 3″h x 1.5″ w; 2 Cubs, each 2.5″ x 1.5″ x 3.75″. Billboard Cart has a mother bear with two cubs. All have flocking and are glued down. Estimated measurements for mother bear 1.5″ x 1.5″; cubs about 1″ x1″. Wooden cage with door came with small bear marked Hong Kong. Artisan took time to place metal band around bear’s left hind leg. 1.25″ X 0.5″ X 0.5. Two Lion Cubs are marked Germany on their bellies. Warthog, Hyena, Tiger and Lion are probably also of German composition, all hard plastic. Craquelure evident on lion and cubs, and tiger. All pieces have minimal damage, but no deal-breakers. All offers considered and personally reviewed so please make it worth the time for both of us. I do not use presets. This is a darn neat set and if you’re unhappy with what you receive, I will happily take it back in unaltered condition. Please ask any questions or if you need more pics.

This is a very uncommon, antique carnival prize dog. He’s a little dirty from all the years he’s endured, but in overall very good condition. He has a few spots where the fabric is deteriorating. His felt pants have spots where the felt has rubbed off/down. He’s not soft and is very stiff. One of his arms has a bit of a kink in it. Please review all photos for condition. Antique Folk Art Handmade Circus Racing / Gambling Game Circa 1930’s with Prov

This is truly an amazing one of a kind handmade piece of Americana. It is a folk art / tramp art mechanical / coin operated gaming device with a circus theme made in circa 1930’s (see provenance below). Please see below provenance the operation of the game as I understand it. The approximate dimensions of the case are 9″ high by 17″ square. Provenance The provenance of this piece is shown in picture #3. Operation / Understanding of the Game To highlight first, you will see pictures with and without the plexiglass covering the game. This was originally designed in this way (but original was glass insert). The reason being is that to play / operate the game, the case must be opened. When not in use and to transport the glass could be reinserted. You can slide the glass in and out by removed of 2 screws. It operates as follows: There is coin drop slot in the front which when you drop a coin, it travels through the case to a wooden chute attached to a hinge on the inside of the case. Once the person drops the coin, there is a wooden push knob next to the coin drop slot which must be actuated immediately after dropping the coin. When this knob is pushed, it swings the wooden chute with the coin towards a slotted pulley attached to the bottom of the wheel rotating with the circus animals / #’s on top. The coin is then intended to engage once of the slots on the pulley which brings the wheel to a stop. There is a flag stick on the top of the game which indicates which circus animal / # wins the game and collects the winnings / prize. You can see the mechanism / design in the last pictures. Honestly it is amazing ingenuity…. Custom handmade with wood, scrap metal parts, springs, hinges, etc. It appears some of the components may have been replaced over the past 90+ years due to wear and tear. What I will note is that the setup of the mechanism inside and the height of the pulley are very sensitive adjustments. You can get the wheel to stop quickly but these alignments are critical from what I have found upon trial and error on my part. This is a truly an exceptional piece….. When will you ever see one again? Circus’ are now from a bygone era which will only make this piece appreciate in value!!! Please see all pictures for details on the condition.
