Inventor of the carnival as we know it today. True piece of Americana history. Target is a Cat with a fish is cast iron in a wooden base. Dates to 1880’s. Mangels, the “Wizard of Eighth Street, ” was a machinist and a scholar. He emigrated from Germany in 1883 at age sixteen and by 1886 had a small machine shop in Coney Island where he made cast-iron targets for shooting galleries. Mangels then began studying patents and inventing mechanisms for rides. In 1901 he patented an improved version of the overhead jumping-horse suspension for carousels, the standard mechanism still used on most carousels today. He also invented rides such as the Tickler and the Whip and built the mechanisms for countless roller coasters and scenic railways, including the Ziz at Feltmans. Mangels’s shop could repair any ride in Coney Island, but carousels became his specialty. He crafted the mechanisms for some of the most popular machines of the day. One was the B&B Carousel, which still operates in Coney Island. He teamed up with M. Illions, the famed woodcarver, and together they produced classics like the Feltmans carousel on West Tenth Street. Their combination of artistry and engineering produced what are considered the best carousels ever made. Mangels was also an historian known for his scholarly work. In 1929 he founded the American Museum of Public Recreation on West Eighth Street and Neptune Avenue, and in 1952, at the age of eighty-five, he wrote a definitive history titled The Outdoor Amusement Industry. Mangels died in 1958 at the age of ninety-two. His former shop building on West Eighth Street is now an office of the Department of Motor Vehicles. Measures 13 x 9.5 inches Weighs.

PHOTO CARD FRANK LENTINI THREE LEGGED WONDER BARNUM BAILEY CONEY ISLAND ODDITY. Frank was born Francesco Lentini on May 18th, 1889, in Rosolini, Sicily. He was the fifth of twelve children. Although later known as “The Three Legged Man, ” Frank actually had several additional body parts. These included a full-sized leg extending from his right hip, another foot protruding from his third leg’s knee, and a second set of male genitals. At four months old, his parents, Natale and Giovanna, took him to a specialist to determine the possibility of amputating his third leg. However, the specialist determined that Frank was, in fact, conjoined to a parasitic twin. His third leg was attached to his spine, making it impossible to remove. Barnum was already exhibiting a three-legged man, the German-born George Lippert. But Frank soon eclipsed Lippert in popularity. While he was still a boy, Frank began touring with the Ringling Brothers. In 1906, he debuted with P. Barnum’s circus at Madison Square Garden. Promotional posters called him The Three Legged Sicilian, The Greatest Medical Wonder of All Time, or just The Great Lentini. When Frank Lentini joined the circus, he quickly became one of America’s most popular sideshow performers, along with The Bearded Lady, General Tom Thumb, and The Elephant Man. Today, we would consider the practice of exhibiting people with physical deformities to be exploitive. But the circus offered Frank and other sideshow performers not just the opportunity to make a living but also to become a celebrity. During his career, Frank toured with every major circus in America as well as Coney Island sideshows. He became so successful he even toured as his own headlining act. He became a U. Citizen at age 30. In 1935, Frank and Theresa separated. He lived with another woman, Helen Shupe, for the remainder of his days. Lentini died in 1966 from lung failure at the age of 77.
