For the Decorative, Rare & Unusual. Those who find beautiful meanings in beautiful things are the cultivated. For these there is hope. An Early 20thC Painted Papier-Mâché French Fairground Passé-Boules Ball Toss Game. Origin: French Period: Early 20thC Provenance: Unknown Date: c. 1910-35 Height: 25″ Width: 14.5″ Depth: 10. The papier-mâché Passé-Boules toss game, as a Pierrot clown, wearing a blue rimmed pointed hat, with a gaping open mouth into which one tosses balls, showing the original painted features, and with unusual glass eyes, the whole on a pink painted hanging board showing related newspaper cuttings to the reverse, to a ball tray with chalked sections at 2, 5 and 8, the whole surviving from the first half of twentieth century France. Evocative of the magic of the fairground, the mask and backboards paint has flaked and chipped off in places with some small cracks here due to the nature of it being a well-used amusement item, the chalk numbering is later and the ball tray is possibly a later replacement. Historically, passé-boule (ball-toss) was a very popular fairground game in France from the 19th century onwards and the masks often depict figures to be ridiculed. A particularly aesthetically pleasing example that adds an instant nostalgic charm to a room. All pieces listed by Doe & Hope are of the finest quality. Antique WILDCAT light up eyes Bag toss game Tin 1930s STUART MFG CO Cin O”’VERY RARE’. I can not find this game on any of my google searches but do see games from this company. From what little i know this is from the 1930s because of how the Cinncinnati Ohio is written and has no zip code either. It is Tin metal, with a Copper metal strip on a wood board that is no corroded and spring loaded board with numbers that when you toss a ball or a bag it would push down and cause contact so the Eye would light up, This all is in great condition. There is a slot in the corner for a battery that i dont have, it is unchecked but i dont see rust or corrosion so probably if anything is bad would be the little small lighted eyes that would originally light up Green, you can see the picture of back the the green plastic gone but thats an easy fixer. Very solid, not rusted, very good condition for a game almost 100 yrs old. The game is 12”x12” x 7”inches and back and tappers down to a wedge in front.
