VERY RARE Signed Antique Photo African American Minstrel Circus Wire Performer

VERY RARE Signed Antique Photo African American Minstrel Circus Wire Performer
Very rare photo of the Great Layton, an African American wire balancing performer in the late 1800s and early 1900s, shown here doing his act, with his advertising banner visible on the left. Layton appears to have signed the back of the photo in ink. I couldn’t find much info about him after that time. This is the only cabinet photo I have ever seen for sale of this performer. It was probably one of a small handful made as part of a promo for a small show. This listing shows a scan of an article I found online. The clipping is shown in this listing for reference only, and the original article is not included. My scan shows the front and back of the same photo, plus the scan of the article. Image including its mount is approximately 4.5″ x 3.5″. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Photographic Images\Photographs”. The seller is “jack_mord” and is located in this country: US. This item can be shipped to United States, Denmark, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vatican City State, Nauru, Wallis and Futuna, Poland, Tonga, San Marino, Ireland, Netherlands, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Iceland, Spain, Macedonia, Estonia, Belgium, Israel, Liechtenstein, Bermuda, Vanuatu, Albania, Italy, Monaco, Switzerland, Republic of Croatia, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Portugal, Malta, Cyprus, Australia, Austria, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Norway, Canada, Kiribati, Andorra, Greece, Romania, Greenland, Serbia, Montenegro, Japan, Lithuania, United Kingdom, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Finland, Luxembourg, Western Samoa, France, Germany, Latvia.

This is part of a unique set of photos from “Captain Jim Moore’s Famous Shows” Carnival & Sideshow Traveling Show based out of Bridgeport, Pennsylvania. This original image is one of 5 from different carnival shows they set up across the country. He ran sideshows along with carnival rides and games. This photo features a great sideshow banner for the OLD PLANTATION SHOW. It featured African American performers. The man in the middle with a beard is Capt Jim Moore, the owner of the traveling carnival show. These photos are from the estate of Nettye Cameron who traveled with the circus (possibly as a manger for Mr Moore). These photos come from her estate, down the line from her great great nephew. She worked closely with the side show cast as she had a lot of photos with them and some were signed (will be offered up at a later date). Please check my other auctions for more vintage photos. In most cases, the actual original photos are much clearer than the posted images. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Photographic Images\Photographs”. The seller is “photofella” and is located in this country: US. This item can be shipped worldwide.

This is an original real photo postcard which measures approximately 3 3/8 x 5 3/8 inches. Acceptable condition with creasing most notably two center horizontal creases, upper right and lower left: some loss on upper right and upper left and edge loss. Hall had a new plan for a show. He joined with his daughter, Mable, and her new husband, William Campbell, to form The New Orleans Minstrels. Hall gave a lengthy interview about the show to the Evansville Review in November 1915. Although he was nearly eighty years old, Col. Hall had decided that he would be the active head of the show. The veteran showman believed that the country was on the eve of great prosperity and was ready for a new show. The combination stateroom and baggage cars had all of the conveniences of a hotel. The troupe would be traveling in luxury with their trained horses, lions, and a band. When the show opened in Evansville in April 1916, the name of the show had been changed to “Campbell’s New Orleans Minstrel Show”. Mable Hall Campbell rode her two fancy horses, Rob Roy and the Colonel. Hall led the circus parade. Get your own map of past buyers.
