RARE CIRCUS CDV – CHANG & ENG BUNKER – SIAMESE TWINS – WITH PERIOD INSCRIPTION – You are viewing a rare CDV of the legendary Chang & Eng Bunker, the most famous Siamese twins that arrived in the United States in the 1830’s. The image has a foreign inscription which suggests they were on tour or this image was sent outside the U. During the 19th Century. They did travel extensively throughout their sideshow career some of which was under P. The bold image shows the conjoined twins captured in three quarter length view. Barnum’s most famous Siamese twins, Chang & Eng Bunker. In this circus collectable, you can clearly see the ligament at their abdomen that connected these two brothers. A previous owner at one point actually inscribed at the bottom of the mount with a metal stylist the words, “Siam Twins” which helps to date this CDV to a very early example. Like all of the CDV’s taken of the twins, there is no back mark or photographer. You are considering a rare photo of the most famous Siamese twins in history. They had a long career and history you can google if you wish to learn more. Good luck to all my fellow early American circus collectors landing this rarely seen photograph. CONDITION: Please view my detailed scan for the actual condition of the image and as part of my description. This early CDV of one of the first famous circus duos is in fine antique condition. The print has some fingerprints from when the image was fixed in the darkroom, but the mount remains in super condition for its age. Photographic cabinet card of Chang (Zhan Shichai), approximately 110mm x 165mm in size, n. Slightly creased across photographic image from the left hand edge to about an inch across, just catching the chest of Chang, heavy vertical crease to centre of card leaving it bowed. An attractive image of Chang and an unknown man, the reverse is printed with the details of the London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company, with written details of Chang’s size, age and weight, (above 8 feet high, 33 years old and 26 stones in weight) with Chinese characters to either side. Chang apparently had acromegaly, and was advertised as’standing nearly nine feet high in his stocking feet’ (Bogdan,’Freak Show’, page 99), according to Wikipedia he retired in 1878 and lived out the rest of days in Bournemouth, but there is a Times article from 1880 noting that he is appearing with Brustad and Che-Mah at the Aquarium in London.
