Lawson Wood (1944) Ringling Bros Barnum & Bailey Circus Lg Litho Color Poster
Estate fresh & found out of frame, previously folded & with two tiny archival mended tears along top. Early 20th century, WWII era, Ame ri can vintage artist designed, traveling circus & show, color lithographed posters & associated ephemera. 28″ Height x 20 12″ Width. Weight: Less than 6 oz. There are two, slight, quite small and nearly unnoticeable, approximately inch long vertical tears, found along the upper margin of the paper, which can only be seen upon very close inspection, when you observe the two archival, acid-free taped mends of the two small tears, now attached at the back of the poster, mending the paper breaks and preventing them from traveling any further into the pictorial field. There are two minor and not terribly deep folds, one of which is on the upper left side in a slanted position, while the other is located at the center. There’s also some slight waving from previous exposure to moisture along the bottom margin of the paper. All of these condition issues are minor but are mentioned, in the spirit of honest representation of the poster’s actual vintage condition and with complete transparency. It’s now 77 years old. I’m not 77 years old and I already have a few tears and creases. What the poster fortunately doesn’t have are any visible and depreciating episodes of stains, foxing, paper tanning or significant tears or paper loss. The colors are also still in glorious, nearly saturated, vivid condition and close to how the Ame ri can artist Lawson Wood initially envisioned the piece, when he was commissioned by Ringling Bros. And Barnum & Bailey Circus to produce this original artwork, then made into a color lithograph, to promote their 3-ring, traveling circuses. Handsome and in well-preserved overall vintage condition. Very nice and ready for framing for wall display in your home or office. Good to Very Good overall vintage condition.
